My One Person Show

In my theater evening, "How to Survive Your Adult Relationship with Your Family," I take a humorous look at the challenges that arise for all of us with our families as the years go by.

How to Survive Your Adult Relationship with Your Family

No matter how well you’ve come to terms with your childhood, your adult relationship with your family can pose surprising challenges! My own particular experiences in the last few years led me to write my one person show “How to Survive Your Adult Relationship with Your Family.”

My show combines storytelling, anecdotes and humorous tips for surviving the emotional curveballs we all get thrown as our families change and grow in unpredictable ways. Audience members during performances of the show in Louisville, New York City, Phoenix and Santa Barbara have laughed -- and cried -- and laughed again.

After years of writing humor and being published in places such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Narrative and the Barnes and Noble Review, I decided to take it live. I've written for actors and worked with them across the country, and with my husband, Ray Sawhill, I've co-written plays, an audio entertainment (that is, yes, quite naughty!) and a web series. But I had never done a one person show myself. With the encouragement of my theater friends in NYC I took the leap.

And I love it! I love connecting with audiences as I'm performing "How to Survive Your Adult Relationship with Your Family" around the country. Not as a stand up comedian, but as a person who's looking at life and sharing some funny reflections about it. And what pleases me most is how many people have come up to me afterwards and talk about their own experiences.
